Should Inner City Teachers Get To Retire Earlier?

Topics: , , ,

I just stumbled across an interesting and potentially controversial idea: letting inner-city teachers retire earlier than suburban teachers. The idea behind this (in Connecticut) is so inner-city teachers will be more likely to stay and not leave for suburban schools. What do you think? Is this necessary? Should it be adopted? Let your fellow teachers and administrators know your thoughts in the comments, on our Facebook page or by tweeting @edudemic! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Here’s the report:

An advisory committee said letting inner-city Connecticut teachers retire earlier than suburban teachers might motivate experienced educators to stay in troubled urban districts.

The recommendation is part of a report being released Tuesday by the Connecticut Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

It includes suggestions on how to improve graduation rates and close achievement gaps between white students and their black and Hispanic peers.

One idea calls for allowing teachers who work in underperforming city districts for at least 10 years to retire with full benefits after 30 years instead of 37 years.

Some of the suggestions already are part of a state education reform package adopted last spring.
