No Jeans Or Sneakers? Schools Unveil New Mandatory Dress Code For Teachers

Teachers in Waterbury, Connecticut are going to need to start looking a little bit better after a new dress code was implemented today.

Officials said that it’s not a checklist of what a teacher can or cannot wear, but there are a lot of recommendations. Here’s a quick list of what’s being recommended:

  • No jeans
  • No Spandex or stretch pants (presumably yoga pants)
  • No tank tops, halter tops, tube tops
  • No sneakers
  • No flip-flops or sandals
  • No tattoos
  • No tongue piercings

“If they are teachers, they should come in professionally,” said one unidentified Waterbury student.

That would seem to be a given, but Waterbury schools wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page when it came to the teacher dress code. The Waterbury School Board voted Monday night to put dress code guidelines into the new three-year teacher contract, which was put into effect in July.

Under the new guidelines, teachers will not be allowed to wear jeans, Spandex or stretch pants. Also off-limits: Tank, halter or tube tops, sneakers, flip-flops and sandals are also prohibited.

No visible tattoos or tongue piercings are allowed either. The superintendent of schools said sneakers will be allowed if a teacher provides a doctor’s note.

Gym teachers are also exempt from the no sneaker policy. The guidelines also spell out that teachers need to keep neat hair appearance and keep their mustaches and beards trimmed.
