What Are 2010′s Best Online Resources For Teachers?

Topics: , , ,

Sure Apple just announced the ‘app of the year‘ and it’s not a fart app. It’s Flipboard, a terrific news reader app that lets you swipe your way through your rss feeds. Fully formatted, it’s like your own newspaper with video, instant news, and more. But I digress.

This brings me to wonder, what are this year’s best online resources for teachers? There’s thousands out there and it’s always helpful to find out what your peers are using in their everyday lives.

The Contest

Just vote for what you think is this year’s best online resource for teachers. It can be an app on iPad, iPhone, Android, or a more web-based resource like Diigo or WordPress or Twitter.

It doesn’t have to be a resource that started in 2010, just one that you feel was a great personal resource for the year.

The goal here is to get a robust a list so if you see a resource already listed, submit a different one. For example, don’t just write ‘Twitter’ 5 times. Think of another resource you frequently use that you want others to know about.

The Prize(s)

In the spirit of getting the best / most  results, why not offer a fun little giveaway? Since there will likely be no clear winner or loser, 5 entries will be selected at random to each win their choice (1) of the following:

  • A donation of $20 in your name to a charity of your choice.
  • A $20 donation to any project in your name to DonorsChoose.org.
  • A $20 iTunes gift card
  • A $20 gift certificate to Twournal so you can have your presumably brilliant tweets bound and stored on your coffee table for years to come.

How to Enter

Simply write in the comments of this post! You must log in with your actual name and e-mail address in order to be considered for one of the prizes. Don’t worry, you can log in with Twitter, Facebook, OpenID, WordPress, and more with just a click or two.

In your comment, all you have to do is write the name of the online resource you’re voting for.

If you see someone already voted for what you wanted to write, pick a different resource. That way we can all develop as robust a list as possible.

All The Details

  • The last day for entries is New Year’s Eve. Vote by midnight on 12/31/10 to be considered for the prizes. Prizes will be announced the following week.
  • Winners will be notified by e-mail and mentioned in a post on Edudemic. (It will be up to you to decide if you want to have your selected gift shared with the Edudemic community.)
  • You may enter as many times as you like as you offer helpful resources. Spammers will have their IP and comments blocked.
  • One online resource submission per comment, please. For example, just write ‘Diigo’ not a list of your 5 favorite resources.

That’s it, happy voting and I can’t wait to see what happens!

This brings me to wonder, what are this year

My iPad has become such a useful tool in my elementary classroom...I need a class set! Also, www.kidblog.org is a site that has my students blogging like crazy... Incredibly easy to manage at the elementary level. Love it!

I would love some ipads, I've never tried them but I think it would be wonderful for kidblg, my 4th graders are crazy about blogging!!!!

Www.kidsmart.org.uk offers fantastic free esafety resources for primary teachers, www .digizen.org has superb resources for secondary school teachers, and www.Childnet.com/KIA has amazing free resources for all teachers and parents too including films, and lesson plans. All these resources are made by Childnet International, who will be the UK Safer Internet Centre from Jan 2011 for 18 months!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/ This is a great site where students can actually test out ideas on science topics and watch results. It also has a little teaching lesson plus a online quiz. All fun!

Great resource for teachers, guidance counselors, parents and students who are on the college search http://www.studentadvisor.com

I have loved delicious, and I hope that it will survive, and diigo is almost as useful to me (and has other useful tools). Twitter is definitely an amazing resource. Google Apps... how do you decide?

Not looking for prize -just adding my thoughts :) . My vote goes to 1. Yammer-NSW dept education and training Australia 2 .http://www.symbalooedu.com/ 3 .http://livebinders.com/

I have heaps of web tools I use, but would have to say Twitter and #edtech would be the best, as it provides heaps of interesting articles and web tools for use as ICT in the classroom.

My students have had a ton of fun with www.zooburst.com and we are getting to know http://www.aviary.com/ And for managing and organizing a classroom wiki to communicate with the parents I love: www.pbworks.com www.wikispaces.com Happy Teaching! CD

http://www.thekidreport.org is like wiki spaces, but has features that are more for teachers - privacy, member management, auto email to parents. I'm a developer on this site - it's being used by classrooms in Seattle.

GlogsterEDU. Great site and a fun way to get kids using web tools.

I use Gradebook for Professor by Android for Academics and love it. But since that is already listed here, I will nominate another app by the same developer. It is called Attendance and it is also by Android for Academics. It is a very easy way to take attendance, even in large classes.

Gradebook for Professors (by Android for Academics) - http://androidforacademics.com/grade-book/

Full Disclosure: I'm involved with the team that created Android for Academics, but I'm also a professor and use it a ton.

Appreciate the disclosure. Doesn't matter if you're affiliated... as long as you find your particular online resource useful!

Google Apps: basically every tool/application you need all in one place...and for free!

like any app in particular?
