Are Teachers Obsessed With Facebook?

POP QUIZ!

What’s the first app you check in the morning on your phone? What’s the first website? How do you find out what your friends have been up to?

If you answered ‘Facebook’ to any or all of those questions, you’re not alone. As if we needed further proof, there’s an infographic circulating that has enough facts and figures to make your head spin.

Some highlights of the infographic from SocialHype and OnlineSchools.org (below) include:

  • 1 out of every 13 humans is on Facebook.
  • 3 out of every 4 Americans are on Facebook.
  • 1 out of every 26 Americans sign into Facebook on a daily basis.

Teachers On Facebook

Take a good look at this information (or click here for the full-size version), and let me know just how much you use Facebook. I am honestly curious if teachers and education administrators use Facebook as much as those refrenced in the infographic below. Looking forward to your comments!

You can also weigh in on, of course, the Edudemic Facebook page. Feel free to mention @edudemic on Twitter too if you’re less Facebook inclined.

This data seems, at worst, blatantly incorrect, or, at best, twisted to meet the needs of the infographic. Am I really supposed to believe that 28% of 28-34 yr olds check fb before they get out of bed? 28%?! What percentage of 28-34 yr olds own smart phones? 57% of people talk to others more online than in person…how is that quantified? Reading emails? Chats? or is it actually talking, like skype? Is reading a blog, "talking to someone"? I'm confused.
