The 25 Best School Websites

Social media may be free, but implementing a beautiful, easy-to-use, and helpful website for your school is not. Website design is a big expenditure for most schools. That’s probably why schools let several years go by before any major redesigns are done.

For example, Trinity College has had the same website for the last 7 years. While an extreme case, there comes a time when all schools should think about the message they’re sending to applicants, alumni, and students by having an outdated website.

Wonderful Design

Not every school let’s as much time pass between website refreshes. In fact, there are dozens of school sites that feature amazing Web 2.0 technology, social media integration, and overall wonderful design. So if you’re a designer looking for inspiration, a higher ed administrator looking for help, or just someone who loves looking at beautiful websites, please enjoy (and share!) this list of the 25 Best School Websites. You’ll notice there are plenty of Boston University websites on the list. We have no affiliation with the school and are simply amazed at the amount of creative and elegant designs coming out of that school.

  1. I work at Coker College and I do have to say that our website is not easy to use. I have to be honest because we do not deserve to be on this list but I do hope it brings more students to the campus.

    • We were just noting that this particular site had great design really. Trust us, most schools have so much information that creating an easy-to-use-for-everybody navigation system is pretty much impossible. For instance, at Harvard Law the new website (launched about 10 months ago or so) is organized by department but students don't care about departments when searching for answers. Anyway, thanks for reading and let us know if Coker does any new or exciting updates!

    • I completely disagree with Lisa and I also work at Coker — I think the site is great — we get positive comments about it all the time!

  4. I am a professor of English at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. I have been a long-time critic of our campus web site and its bothersome navigation. Good job highlighting some successful interpretations around the country. Bad job, however, in allowing a glaring punctuation error to exist in your third paragraph. Please correct this to enhance your credibility.

  5. Just wanted to say thanks for including us in your 25! Also, wanted to make a note, saying that we have had incredible success using Facebook to connect our Prospective/Current Students as well as our Alumni. It has created an awesome community that everyone can be a part of. Social Media has been really beneficial for us.

  8. Seminole State College of Florida (www.seminolestate.edu) has a website that is very useful and geared to the student community. Look especially at the newsroom/calendar area and the online catalog (that shows what courses are being offered each semester by campus and professor!).

  9. BU does have excellent websites, as a general rule. Most of the university's sites (including the Admissions one you posted above) is all based on highly-customized WordPress themes. Good stuff!

  10. Thanks for sharing websites that are doing it right! I love learning from the best. By the way, you still have a typo in the 3rd paragraph (should be lets, not let's).
