This Is JFK's Application To Harvard

Courtesy: JFK Presidential Library

If your son, daughter, or students are applying to colleges and wondering which schools they should use as ‘reaches’ then you should show them this. It’s President John F. Kennedy’s application to Harvard.

Turns out JFK was not exactly at the head of his class at Choate (where he got a few grades of ’55′ but I’m not sure if that means he got an F or if that’s a different grading scale.) However, having a father who is the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and also being a Harvard legacy can’t hurt.

I’ve attached some of the most interesting documents from JFK’s application but be sure to click here to view the entire application (26 pages total) over at the official JFK Presidential Library website.

Personally, I love that he wrote that some of his interests include politics. He also took a year off before entering Harvard to pursue schooling at the London School of Economics and also was giving thought / applying to Princeton.

According to the library, most of these application records contain items concerning President Kennedy’s admission to Harvard University, including applications for the College Entrance Examination Board and admission to Harvard College, character and academic references, and correspondence between the admissions offices of Princeton University and Harvard University. Of note is a handwritten letter by President Kennedy requesting to defer his admission to Harvard University for one year so that he may study at the London School of Economics.

These are just some of the more interesting documents from JFK’s application but be sure to click here to view the entire application (26 pages total) over at the official JFK Presidential Library website.
