10 Reasons To Use Digital Textbooks

Topics: , , , ,

The future is here. If you’re looking for ways to cut costs as either a student or teacher, why not consider digital textbooks? There’s cheaper, easier to use, and a lot easier on the back. I remember my old L.L. Bean backpack nearly breaking under the weight of my required 10 textbooks in high school. Ahh, the good ol’ days. Here’s a few reasons why the digital revolution is worthwhile when it comes to textbooks courtesy of CourseSmart:

1.) Availability: Over 90% of core higher education texts

2.) Savings: Up to 60% over print textbooks

3.) Apps: Use free iPad, iPhone and soon-to-come Android app to read etextbooks

4.) Instant-Access: Anytime, anywhere – no waiting, no shipping charges

5.) Highlight: Highlight key information in your etextbooks

6.) No backpacks required: Access you etextbooks from your laptop, iPad or iPhone with internet

7.) Search: Find what you need in your textbook the same way you’d search the internet

8.) Copy, Paste, Email: Take your own online notes or send notes to your classmates in Word or Excel

9.) Print: Print up to 10 pages at any one time with an overall limit of 150% of the total number of pages

10.) eResources: Interact with learning tools such as online homework, quizzes and exercises

I love the fact that people are starting to think about writing their own textbooks. If you have a mac than you need go no further than Pages. I haven't used it in a while but on a PC Publisher would be a good bet. It is amazing that we all put worksheets together for units of work but rarely do we think about going the next step.

We constructed one as a collaborative project with a Yr 10 art class as part of a 1-to-1 transition program. It was so successful that we now build one for each new unit of work that we begin together. We just download them from our own server, but we also wanted an authentic audience so we published them on issuu.com. It was great to see the student's response when they saw both their work online and people's responses. Check them out for ideas.

There are heaps of articles on designing pages but some basic guidelines ca be found on pg 5 of another text we created;

Good luck

Sounds wonderful, however, what if the students do not have access to an IPad, IPod or the internet? Some ecomically disavantaged students fall into this catagory.

Any school that still buys textbooks is so behind it all. Check my summary of "The World Is Open" by Curtis Bonk. http://bit.ly/ffLlVQ Every child should be able to learn anything, anytime, and anywhere.

I love this concept. I am currently attempting my first digital textbook for one of my classes. I would be very interested in any advice on what software I might use. Please I am only putting together some material for my classes and not for publication, so free software would be fantastic

Some advantages are that digital textbooks never go out of date, a laptop or electronic notebook weighs significantly less than a backpack full of textbooks, and the cost over time is less since it’s less expensive to update electronic content than it is to produce a new print edition. One would expect there would be significant environmental impact as well. All those obsolete textbooks have to go somewhere.   [...]
