For college students on a budget, Vonage Mobile has released a mobile app that may address your calling and texting needs.
Long the sole domain of Skype, and then quietly Google Voice, Vonage has entered the mobile VoIP world with release of their new mobile app for Android and iPhone.
Vonage Mobile is a VoIP service that allows you to make phone calls over the internet—thus the “Voice over Internet Protocol” initialism. The big idea here is to offer massively discounted calling rates to everyone, while offering perks like free calls and texts to other Vonage Mobile App users.
Vonage Mobile feels that what sets their app apart from Skype is that Skype app was born for PC—and is so a bit clunky–while their app was crafted bottom-up for use on mobile devices.
How It Works
So how does it work?
- Download the app
- Enter your mobile number and email address
- Check verification text
- Place call or text from imported contact list
Mobile App Features
- Free calling and messaging to other Vonage users
- Imports contacts from your phone’s native address book
- High-def codec allows for—you guessed it—high-definition calling
- International calling at reduced rates compared to Skype and mobile carriers
- Works over Wi-Fi or 3G/4G
- Use your mobile number as your caller ID
To celebrate the release of their app, Vonage Mobile is offering free calling (up to 3000 minutes per month) to any mobile or physical landline in the U.S, Canada, and Puerto Rico. For now, Vonage Mobile does not support video calling, though representatives indicated video as an optional feature in the near future.More information on the app can be found at Vonage Mobile’s website.
If you’ve used the app, or other VoIP apps such as Skype, let us know what your experience has been like.
