If the rumors and screenshots are true, there’s a very fun classroom project coming your way… courtesy of Apple. They’re working on a way to let anyone create a 3D avatar that looks like it just walked off a Pixar film. It’s rumored to become a part of Apple’s Game Center but it could have larger uses.
What’s A 3D Avatar Creator?
First, let’s take a look at what we’ve heard. Apple has filed a patent that shows they’re working on a powerful avatar creation tool that can be used across devices. Here’s a whole lot more on that thanks to Patently Apple. Basically, it’s going to be a fun new way to create the ‘digital you.’ Here’s a screenshot that gives you a clear picture of what the app will look like (image via the patent application):
In The Classroom
Now let’s look at the classroom implications. One project that could be quite fun would be to have students create two different 3D avatars. The first could be one that’s supposed to be as close to what they currently look like as possible. The second avatar could be how they see themselves looking in the next 5, 10, 20 years. Will they be bald? Fatter? Thinner? Wear glasses? Thanks to the new tool from Apple, it looks like students will be able to manipulate their 3D avatar down to every last detail. This could be a great project that truly teaches students about growth, aging, and of course technology.
Best of all, it looks like this 3D avatar tool will be available for ‘electronic devices’ which could hopefully mean it’s for more than just iPads. If your school can’t afford an iPad for every student but has some Mac computers lying around, you could still do this project. Keep your fingers crossed.
