Back in my day… we didn’t have fancy things like iPhones and electricity. Okay, maybe just iPhones. I grew up without the kind of cutting-edge technology in the hands of every college student.
So was I at a disadvantage? How integrated is technology into the lives of college students? Are college students addicted to their smartphones?
A new infographic from Presta takes a colorful look at the current state of the modern college student. Do any of these stats surprise you? Personally, I’m a bit sad to see that 38% of students can’t go more than 10 minutes without checking their smartphone or other device.

Awesome infographic!
The other trend I’ve seen is that college students use things like KhanAcademy.org and Backpack.tv to watch educational videos online.
“So was I at a disadvantage? How integrated is technology into the lives of college students? Are college students addicted to their smartphones?”
I think we need to get over ourselves. Throughout history, we’ve lamented the past… I distinctly remember my father complaining about the Beatles. (That’s not real music, he would say.) We’re not suppose to be preparing students for OUR future but for their future. Just because you don’t speak the same language doesn’t mean it isn’t as “good” as the language you spoke back in the “good old days”. In today’s world, if you don’t know how to use technology, you will be at a disadvantage because that is the way we communicate, collaborate and grow in today’s world. Just like everything else in life, there are two sides to technology…the good, the bad and everything in between. Let’s focus on leveraging the technology for good and quit expending so much energy complaining about “those darn kids today”.
