Steve Wheeler of the University of Plymouth explores the concept of new learning forms that don’t simply place old forms on new digital platforms, but reconsider those forms.

Key among the ideas given is personalized learning via the Just in time, Just enough, Just for me admonishment, a vision nearly impossible without a fully engaged community, smart application of technology, or both.

Spelling is incorrect for the word “Personalised” on slide 15. It should be Personalized.

Not misspelled. That’s actually the British spelling of the word.

Hi Sage, us quaint old royalist founding fathers of the English language have a number of differences in the way we spell things to that which is often described by non-Brits as “US English”. So if I decide to apply some *colour* to my posting, it gets *recognised* as an error by a US English spellchecker, as an example. G

Hahahahahah Sage Rose must not be British!

  • I’m surprised you missed “organised” on slides 25 and 33, Sage Rose – that’s also a British spelling as opposed to our American spelling “organized”.

I enjoyed how this article was different than a typical article about education. The slides were helpful to understand the different parts of the article as opposed to a traditional article. Another point that I felt was interesting was the slide “Years to reach an audience of 50 Million”. I realize that Facebook and the Apple iPod were recently added but I never realized that it only took 2 and 3 years respectfully for them to reach an audience of 50 million. I agree that communication, reflection, collaboration, community, creative tools, and amplification are all a part of essential learning components. I feel students should feel comfortable using the previous components in order to learn. Students could also use wikis or blogs to post their reflections and to collaborate with their fellow students and teachers. Students can also use education social media sites such as Edmodo as a way to collaborate with their fellow students and teachers.

  • A presentation to make one think. I see the quote by Hoffer happening all around me. The quote by Einstein made me wonder though – what happens when you have imagination without knowledge?
