Kate Fanelli, a math teacher, had an moment of inspiration while listening to a keynote speaking talk about gamification.

“(W)hen I heard the keynote speaker explain leveling, I immediately turned to my colleague and told him, ‘we can do that’. By the end of the keynote, I had drawn up an outline for MathLand.”

The article by Peter Ross talks through the decision to gamify her math classroom, how she did it, and the benefits she’s seen firsthand.

Gamification is an innovation on the rise. I think it is a great way to teach as well as keep students engaged with material while having fun. I recently started my 3 children on this math and memory learning game, Brainetics (http://www.brainetics.com), and so far the gamification method has worked wonders! I highly encourage teachers embrace gamification as it a great way to teach students. Great article!

  • I think this is an awesome idea. There’s a lot of debate about whether gamification tricks kids or fails in the areas it’s trying to achieve, but the results are unarguably positive.
