Got 30 seconds and want to see exactly how the country now known as the U.S. expanded across the continent? Ever wish you could see all that in one simple animated GIF? Me neither.

Until I saw this.

This thing is pretty darn amazing. I’m very impressed with the hard work that went into it. Here’s the source (thanks to the comments!)

    It is quite neat. I think it would be better if were a bit slower. It goes too fast to really process the information. Is there a way to slow it down? Thanks!

    I agree. Very cool, but WAY too fast to follow.

  • Colorful but useless for reasons already stated.

    To slow it down, just save it to your own computer. Then you can step through it one frame at a time.

    @Tamra
    Just watch it a couple times or open it up in an image editing program like GIMP (freeware).

    Also, it’s supposed to be information overload so you can see the changes quickly. If you’re really curious about the divides, I’m sure wikipedia would give you a lot of information and probably teach you loads about history.

    I think it’s really mesmerizing, I’ve watched it several times now.

  • How does one save it to a computer to slow it down?

    • hmm you should be able to right-click the image and do a ‘save image as’ I believe.

    Saving to desktop was a great idea! That makes it much easier to really be able to look at the map and read the text at the bottom. It will also be easier to show to students. Thanks for the tip!
