As I was browsing the interwebs recently, I stumbled upon a piece about PBS’s teacher-innovators. The awards recognize innovative PreK-12 classroom educators, media specialists, technology coordinators and homeschool educators who use any type of digital media to enhance their students’ learning.
The first round of these awards was given in 2010, when over 700 teachers entered their classroom projects (2010, incidentally, was the year that Edudemic was founded!). Since then, there have been a lot of new things happening on the digital media front. New iPads, netbooks, smartphones, and tablets have brought technology into the hands of many more people, and many teachers are now using technology in their classrooms like never before. Schools are getting behind the edtech trend and for many, there’s funding where there wasn’t before. So we’re sure that this year, there will be some pretty spectacular entries.
What Does An Entry Look Like?
Entries show, either through a written essay with photos or a video, how the teacher is using digital media to enhance their student’s learning. In a nutshell, show them how you’re going above and beyond a textbook and lecture classroom. To check out some of the more successful entries, you can take a look at the 2010 and 2011 winners.
How To Apply
For video applications, your video can be up to 3 minutes in length. For those opting for a written essay, the document should be up to three pages with images.
Thirty educators in total will receive prizes for their outstanding work with the top 10 winners receiving a professional development prize package for a week-long, all-expense-paid “Innovation Immersion Experience” at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, and a PBS TeacherLine course.
The deadline to apply for the awards is December 12, 2012.
