We talk about how students and teachers use technology on a daily basis on Edudemic. From 1:1 classrooms to BYOD / BYOTech, there’s a lot of learning models in use right now. So what are the biggest ways students actually use technology?
A fabulous new infographic spells out exactly how undergraduate students are using technology, what they prefer, and how they want teachers to use tech. In other words, this infographic is beyond useful and worth passing around to your colleagues.
Some of the stats might surprise you. I was personally surprised by the fact that more than half of students wanted their teachers to communicate more using face-to-face methods (as opposed to a digital manner). What surprises you?

Youre joking right? Students can’t live without Blackboard? Are you sure that wasnt said sarcastically? Students “can’t live without Blackboard” because that’s what institutions force them to use. Force being the imperative word. As a student who has had to use BB at the undergrad and grad level, and had numerous conversations with CIOs, students and teachers, I’m certain you would have gotten a different answer if you had asked “Do you enjoy using Blackboard?”.
What strikes me most is that almost half of all students wish their instructors to communicate more period
Seems like they are stating: ‘use whatever you want but plz. communicate!’
If communication is key for them one wonders is it wise to have undergraduates figure out userunfriendly or complicated tools like BB first before they can communicate with their instructor.
I wonder what some samples of “social studying sites” are… Any ideas?
Can you provide any info about the survey sample? Where, when, how many…? This is very handily produced, but I worry about its reliability.
Remind101.com. Is a great way to text your students safely.
It looks to me like the info is from an online institution for students studying a bachelor degree(?)
Would love to know more and I have sent a message requesting more information!
This infographic reminds me how much I dislike infographics…
As a recently graduated student and a previous University employee, I can provide a little perspective on a few of the findings.
A lot of the communication of academics to students is not clear enough or timely enough. That’s why we want more. We prefer it face to face so we can question, and because academic emails are often so poorly written they could mean anything!
The learning management systems are clunky and frustrating as each academic uses them differently and it take half a unit to learn where they are hiding the stuff you need! But yes, students are dependent on them, through necessity.
For me a social studying site was facebook- a platform my course peers used to communicate share information and unravel the confusing messages the academics gave us. It was also a place to organise protests and rebellions
