We all know that good study habits are part and parcel to doing well in any educational endeavor.
Good study habits usually translate to better grades, more retention and the student, overall, getting more out of the educational program. Studying, however, is something that many people have trouble doing. The main reason is that many of us do not understand what we need to do to create an environment that is conducive to study.
It is not enough to lug one’s books home and try to pour over them at the kitchen table. This is not comfortable, nor is this makeshift study area conducive to long periods of comfortable study that will help with retention of information.
What follows are a number of tips to creating a study area that will help to improve your study habits, as well as a way to keep your study goals realistic.
Quiet, Uncluttered Area
Clutter distracts the mind. Having letters, correspondence and other junk in the area you are trying to study in muddles the mind and reduces the efficacy of study efforts. Creating a study area that is free from clutter and anything unrelated to study will help the student maintain focus, as well as reduce distraction at the same time.
Choose a Place Free from Distraction
Trying to study in the same room as the rest of the family, or with a television on, leads to a lack of focus and distraction. It is helpful to create a distraction-free environment. Turn off all televisions, radios and find a place where one can study alone.
Keep outside distractions out. Find an unused room in your home or create a small study nook in your bedroom. Wherever one can find space in which distraction can be avoided is the best place for one to set up their study environment.
Study for Reasonable Chunks of Time
Cramming is never a good way to study, even if you have a perfect environment in which to do so. It is important that one not only has a relaxing, distraction-free study area, but that they also study in reasonable chunks of time. More than an hour or so and the brain starts to wander and many of us begin to lose focus. Studying for short periods of time, regularly, rather than cramming, is the best way to get the most out of your efforts.
Creating a small environment that is designed to create the best atmosphere for concentration and focus will dramatically improve what you get out of your studies. A comfortable place that is free from distraction helps the student to better focus and concentrate, thus allowing for more to be gleaned from each study session. Even with a great study environment, it is still important to study in manageable chunks of time. Cramming is never conducive to retention, no matter what the study environment is like.
